Does anyone know of websites delineating regulations to become certified to practice massage in Tokyo?
Me M asked:
My husband’s company is transferring him to Japan next Fall, and I am a certified/practicing massage therapist here in the U.S. I would like to research the regulations and possibility for doing so in Japan.

If you want to work as a massage therapist, you have to finish all of the following procedures.
1, You get a high school diploma (in Japan or elsewhere)
2, You finish designated massage school course in Japan which takes 3 years.
3, You take a written massage therapist exam and pass it.
Certification from another country does not work in Japan.

While I am not sure what the certifications are, there are a lot more things you have to take into consideration.
1. Do you know how to speak, read and write Japanese? If you do not, it will be hard to find a Japanese employer.
2. Visas. If you move over to Japan with your husband you would most likely be on a “dependent visa”, while he will be on some sort of “working visa”. His visa allows him to work, yours does not. For you to work under a “dependent visa” you will have to first get permission from immigration authorities, and this only allows you to work part-time only.
3. Now if you wanted to work full time in Japan then you would need to independently apply for a full work visa, however to get a full work visa you need a bachelors degree, and someone in Japan ready to hire you (eg. a job already in line) so they can process the paper work. But then it goes to that it is unlikely that a Japanese company would do so when they can hire domestically for similar jobs.
